Speaking Skills Evaluation Rubric for Very Young Learners

Criteria

1.   Pronunciation and Clarity:

a.    Budding Speaker (1): Your little talker is just starting! They might find it tricky to make their words clear, but every attempt is a big step.

b.    Chatterbox in Training (2): They are getting there! Sometimes their words are clear, and sometimes they need a bit more practice.

c.    Confident Communicator (3): Wow! They often speak clearly and are mostly easy to understand. They're doing great!

d.    Star Speaker (4): Amazing! Their pronunciation is clear and accurate. It's easy to understand what they're saying.

2.   Vocabulary Use:

a.    Word Explorer (1): They're at the beginning of their word adventure, using a few familiar words.

b.    Vocabulary Adventurer (2): They're starting to use more words and are getting better at expressing their ideas.

c.    Word Wizard (3): They use a good range of words and are pretty comfortable trying new ones.

d.    Vocabulary Champion (4): They have a fantastic range of words for their age and use them very well.

3.   Sentence Construction:

a.    Sentence Builder (1): They're starting to put words together. It might be a bit bumpy, but each word is a building block.

b.    Growing Grammarian (2): They're getting the hang of making simple sentences. Sometimes they're just right, and sometimes they're a work in progress.

c.    Skilled Constructor (3): They mostly make complete sentences that make sense. They're really getting good at this!

d.    Sentence Superstar (4): They're a pro at putting words into neat and tidy sentences that tell you exactly what they mean.

4.   Fluency and Flow:

a.    Eager Effort (1): Speaking can be a bit stop-and-go, but their eagerness shines through.

b.    Developing Smoothness (2): They speak with fewer pauses and are getting smoother day by day.

c.    Flowing Speaker (3): Their speech flows quite well with some natural pauses. They're gaining confidence!

d.    Fluency Master (4): Their speech is smooth and confident. They sound like they've been doing this for ages!

5.   Interaction and Responsiveness:

a.    Shy Participant (1): They're a bit quiet during conversations but are trying their best.

b.    Interactive Buddy (2): They join in conversations with a little encouragement and are starting to share their thoughts.

c.    Eager Responder (3): They're quite good at taking part in conversations and usually respond when spoken to.

d.    Conversation Star (4): They love to chat! They respond, ask questions, and really enjoy talking with others.
