Reflective Task : Listening Skills Development vs. Evaluation

Listening Skills Development vs. Evaluation

Objective:

To explore and reflect on the different approaches and outcomes when using materials for teaching (expanding and developing) listening skills as opposed to using them for evaluation purposes in young learners.

Task Description:

  1. Observation and Practice Phase:

    • Activity Implementation: Over the course of a week, implement two different types of listening activities with your young learners.
      • Activity 1 (Skill Development): Choose an activity that focuses on expanding and developing listening skills. This could be a storytelling session, a music and movement activity, or a listening game.
      • Activity 2 (Evaluation): Choose or design an activity that aims to evaluate these listening skills, such as a listening comprehension quiz, following instructions challenge, or sound identification game.
  2. Reflective Journaling:

    • After each activity, take some time to journal your observations. Consider the following questions:
      • How did the children respond to each type of activity?
      • What differences did you notice in their engagement and behavior?
      • How effective was each activity in meeting its goal (skill development or evaluation)?
  3. Comparative Analysis:

    • At the end of the week, review your journal entries and reflect on the following:
      • What are the key differences between activities aimed at developing skills versus those aimed at evaluating them?
      • How do the objectives of these activities influence your choice of materials and your approach to conducting them?
      • What balance between skill development and evaluation do you find most effective, and why?
  4. Peer Discussion:

    • Organize a discussion session with your fellow teachers. Share your experiences and insights from the week.
      • Discuss different strategies and approaches for developing and evaluating listening skills.
      • Share what worked well, what challenges were faced, and how they were overcome.
  5. Action Plan for Future Teaching:

    • Based on your reflections and discussions, create an action plan for integrating listening skill development and evaluation in your teaching practice.
      • Include specific activities, materials, and approaches you plan to use.
      • Consider how you will balance the two aspects in your regular teaching schedule.

Submission:

Submit a written report of your observations, comparative analysis, peer discussion insights, and your future action plan.
